The purple yam, also known as the Indonesian kedondong, is a tuberous root vegetable that grows in the tropics. It is indigenous to Indonesia, where it is a popular vegetable. In the late 19th century, the purple yam was introduced to Hawaii by American missionaries. Purple yams are now cultivated in Hawaii, where they are eaten boiled in soups or eaten as a salad.
Purple Yam Soup is a popular Chinese dish that was created in China’s Hunan province in the early 20th century. It’s a flavorful, hearty soup that is typically served at the end of a Chinese feast. This dish is also called a “Hunanese lamb soup” or “Liang Yamei” (良麻面). The word “yam” in Chinese refers to the purple yam, which is an ingredient in this dish.
This recipe is adapted from “Little House in the Big Woods” by Laura Ingalls Wilder. In the story, Laura’s mother gives her a recipe for making purple yam soup for the family. In order for the yams to turn purple, you must boil them until they’re very soft and then mash them.
One of the delicious American dishes is a thick, rich, and starchy soup with shredded purple yam and prawns. In the United States, yam is often mistaken with sweet potato. Sweet potato and yam are two distinct plant species. The flesh of a yam may be different colors of off white, yellow, purple, or pink, while the skin can range from off-white to dark brown color, depending on the type. Yams may grow to be as big as a sweet potato and weigh up to 100 pounds. Fresh or frozen yam may be found in Asian or African stores.
