Brisket has long been a staple of the BBQ circuit, but it’s time to put that tradition to rest. The brisket is a cut of meat that has been virtually impossible to cook properly for decades. They have been so burned that they look like charred sticks. The texture is dry and mushy, the flavor is bland and tasteless, and the fat is all gone.
This brisket is made in the same way as a traditional barbecue, but in the oven. The great advantage is that you have total control over the temperature and can adjust the oven up to 350F. Thus, you can adjust to a higher or lower temperature, depending on the thickness of the meat.
Oven basted beef brisket is a BBQ to die for! Many people turn their nose up at the idea of brining or marinating meat, but the key to this recipe is the sauce. It infuses the meat and tenderizes it, so it only needs to be cooked for a few hours. (And for those of you that are counting, I did use a baster for my sauce, because I ran out of a measuring cup.). When Tai and I were in New York City, we used to get together for lunch at a tiny BBQ joint. We continued returning because they had some of the finest brisket in town. It was the kind that melted in your mouth after being smoked for many hours. I assumed I’d need a grill or a smoker to make a brisket like that (both of which I don’t have since living in an apartment in a city means no outside space). But, without using a grill or a smoker, I was able to create a flawless Beef Brisket Baked in the Oven.
What is the best way to prepare brisket?
Time and a proper rub are the keys to cooking brisket. Brisket takes a long time to cook; it’s not the kind of meat that can be served fast. This brisket was cooked for 4 hours and came out soft and tender, yet with enough integrity to stay together. After roasting it uncovered in the oven for many hours to tenderize it, it will be cooked in liquid for several hours so that it marinates and remains juicy while cooking. I used a flavorful rub that wasn’t overwhelming since the brisket is thinly cut to serve.
If you’re not sure what to serve with your brisket, there are plenty of options. I like to make sandwiches out of it with pickled veggies and a little barbecue sauce. For a real comfort food dinner, serve it with mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and my Homemade Macaroni & Cheese. There is no incorrect way to eat this; it will be wonderful in whatever form!
When it comes to brisket, my one piece of advice is to allow it plenty of time. You may speed up the procedure by using a crock pot or instant pot, but I thought that the texture and flavor of Oven Baked Beef Brisket were the best. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll be able to attempt a brisket recipe using a grill or smoker.
