Fish Steamed
One of my favorite Jamaican fish recipes is steamed fish. Not just because of its amazing flavor, but also because of its versatility. It may be served as a whole meal or as a main course.
Any kind of fish may be steamed, but it’s better to pick one that won’t fall apart when cooked. Fish including red snapper, doctor fish, and butterfish steam nicely.
I couldn’t find any of these fish, so I settled for sea bass. This fish, although delicious when cooked, is a touch too soft for this dish.
Variations
Jamaican steamed fish comes in a variety of flavors. This fish is cooked with veggies like pumpkin, okra, and carrot, much as I did with this dish. Corn or potato may also be added.
Steamed fish with bammy or water crackers is a popular Jamaican dish. The steamed fish may then be consumed as a complete meal.
This fish may be served as a main course without the veggies, bammy, or crackers.
For this recipe, you’ll need the following ingredients.
Here’s everything you’ll need to make steamed fish:
- Fresh fish: You may use whatever fish you like; I’m using sea bass.
- Fish stock: Use fish tea soup mix if you want to be truly Jamaican. Before putting it in the saucepan, mix it with half a cup of water.
- All the typical suspects in steamed fish: scallion, thyme, scotch bonnet pepper, garlic, onion, and pimento (allspice).
- I’m utilizing pumpkin, okra, and carrot as vegetables.
- To season the fish, use salt and black pepper.
