All you need are a few common home items and a piece of Naan to get started! Our Homemade Taco Pizza is a deliciously simple, layered dish that blends the flavors of Taco Tuesday with the convenience of a Naan flatbread. Make it your own or follow the simple recipe below for a delicious new supper option today!
Naan was first found in the deli section of my supermarket store a few years ago. I decided to give it a go after hearing about it from several of my friends. It’s still in my freezer after four years. Naan works well as a pizza crust, sliced into pieces and served with a dip, or as a breakfast sandwich with a delightful coating of Nutella and strawberries. It also freezes and defrosts well. As much as I’d want to be able to create and utilize my Homemade Pizza Dough all of the time, my schedule doesn’t always allow it. When I ran out of taco shells but the kids insisted for Mexican, I reached for this Naan flatbread. This dish was a happy accident of ‘use what you have’!
What is Naan bread, exactly?
Naan is an Indian bread. Its name is derived from the Persian word non, which means bread. Unlike pita, naan is made with greek yogurt, milk, and sometimes eggs or butter, giving it a softer texture. It doesn’t have a strong taste, therefore it goes well with a variety of meals. It may be eaten with simply a drizzle of olive oil or made into a pizza, like in this recipe!
What kind of precooked taco meat is best?
Tyson makes a great fully cooked seasoned ground beef crumbles —–> get it HERE! They are frozen so you just pop the bag out of the freezer whenever in need and it eliminates one extra step when Mexican food is on the menu! If you are a vegetarian, these Beyond Beef Feisty Crumbles are the way to go ——> get it HERE! Delicious and they taste great.
For our Homemade Taco Pizza, we’ll need the following ingredients:
- Flatbread Naan
- Meat for Tacos
- Cheese that has been shredded
- lettuce, shredded
- Black Olives, diced
- Salsa
- Beans Refried
- Limes
How to create our Taco Pizza at Home:
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
Next, place the Naan bread on a flat surface. Use approximately a quarter of a can of refried beans. Spread the beans evenly over the flatbread.
After that, top the beans with approximately 1 cup of cooked taco meat. I usually prepare extra taco meat when I cook it since there are so many ways to utilize it during the week. If you don’t have any on hand, all you’ll need is half a pound of ground meat (beef, chicken, pig, or turkey) and 2 teaspoons of Taco Seasoning.
Next, top the refried beans with 1/2 cup (or more!) grated cheese.
Place the flatbread on a baking pan and bake for 7 minutes after adding the beans, pork, and cheese. Remove from oven and serve with shredded lettuce, chopped black olives, and salsa on the side. Enjoy with chopped cilantro and lime juice as a garnish.
Additions and variations:
- Beans, black
- Guacamole
- Corn on the cob
- Chiles Verdes
- Cream of Tartar
- Tomatoes, diced
- Slices of avocado
- Queso
If you really like salsa, put it on top of the refried beans. If black olives aren’t your thing, leave them out. If you’re not a big salsa lover, sub with some queso. The possibilities are limitless!
I know I’ve said it a million times, but in our home, Mexican cuisine is always the solution! Taco Tuesday is usually a favorite, so there’s no need to constantly changing things up. However, I like to keep my dishes diverse… the same wonderful tastes, only presented in various ways. It keeps things interesting, and my family enjoys it! Ha. But when I can put Mexican cuisine on a pizza, my kids believe I’m a superhero.
