In the past decade, people have become increasingly interested in healthy eating. With the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, comes the task of finding the right foods to fit into a healthy diet. Granola is a healthy snack that can help you when you feel the need for a quick snack between meals.
It is hard to believe that granola is as old as civilization, but it is. As we all know, the cereal we know and love was invented in 1883 by Gideon Lorillard and his brother, James. What most of us do not know is that it started out as a cluster of other foods, including apples, honey, and molasses. The name was coined by Lorillard’s wife, who suggested it be called “Gideon’s Granola” in honor of her late husband. It was introduced under the name “Lorillard’s Old Fashioned Bran-Leche-Custard” and quickly became popular.
This week’s selection is a homemade, sweet and simple granola, my favorite type of granola, which I make at least once a week as a quick snack or breakfast. It’s perfect for a breakfast on-the-go, a post-workout energy boost, or a sweet breakfast delight when I feel like something a little more decadent. I usually make it with either plain oatmeal or an all-natural whole-grain cereal. The latter gives a better crunch, since the bran flakes are cut into small pieces; the former tends to be quite moist, which allows for a softer crunch. I sprouted the cornmeal, adding a few extra minutes of soaking time and a short spr. Read more about simple granola recipe and let us know what you think.
Crispy, sweet, and with a lot of crunch! Our handmade Sweet and Simple Granola is the perfect topping and complement to just about everything! This granola is addictive in all the right ways, whether it’s over yogurt, in cookies, breads, muffins, or simply eaten raw. To make the greatest homemade breakfast ever, toss it over a Breakfast Banana Split or combine it with a Chia Parfait. Put it in a bowl with some milk and you’ve got yourself some cereal. The options are limitless!
In our home, we eat a lot of granola. We’d purchase a lot of it and do so often. Our kids like eating it, and we enjoy dressing up normally boring items. We chose to create our own so that we could be in charge of what went into it. Because it is made with whole grains and is naturally sweetened, this dish is a much healthier alternative. Did we mention it’s also very simple to make? A mixing bowl and a few pantry items are all you’ll need!
Is it possible to use quick oats instead of rolled oats in granola?
Yes! Granola bars, cookies, muffins, and other baked products frequently include rolled oats. Instant oats may be used for rolled oats, but the cook time will be significantly reduced and the finished dish may lack texture. When I’m in a hurry, I’ll use fast oats instead, but my family likes old fashioned oats.
What is the shelf life of homemade granola?
Granola may be kept for six months in an airtight container in a cold, dry location… and sometimes even longer! Granola and granola bars may also be frozen in the same way that cookies and other sweets are: firmly wrapped in plastic wrap and/or in a resealable freezer bag.
Sweet and Simple Granola Ingredients:
- Rolled Oats (Old Fashioned)
- Coconut Flakes with Sugar
- Oil from Vegetables
- Honey
- Extract of Vanilla
To create our Sweet and Simple Granola, follow these steps:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a large mixing bowl, measure out the oats. Pour in the sweetened coconut flakes after that. Stir until everything is well mixed. Toss the dry ingredients with the oil and honey. Completely combine the ingredients.
Using parchment paper or a silicone mat, line a 913 (or larger) baking sheet. This step is necessary to prevent the honey from sticking to the pan’s bottom. You’ll need to stir the granola a few times as it bakes, and the oats should be able to move around freely. Plus, it’s a lot simpler to clean up!
After that, evenly distribute the granola on the parchment paper and bake it. Make a 45-minute timer. Throughout the baking time, toss the mixture every 10-12 minutes to ensure that everything cooks evenly. After 45 minutes, you’ll see how golden brown it’s become. Remove it from the oven and set it aside to cool fully. Cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
One of our favorite aspects of cooking and recipe development is the opportunity to create something that can be tweaked. Use maple syrup instead of honey, coconut oil instead of butter, add some dried fruits to dress it up, or add cinnamon and nutmeg to add extra flavor! If you or your kids love granola bars as much as we do, check out our page for instructions on how to create our fantastic Granola Bar Treats from scratch using just three additional ingredients! As we previously said, the possibilities with this delicious granola are limitless!
