Ingredients:
- 10-15 hibiscus blooms, crimson
- a half-cup of sugar
- 1 lemon
- 2 quarts water
- cumin powder, 3/4 teaspoon
- a pinch of ground cardamom
This recipe makes 2 glasses of juice.
Time to prepare: 10-12 minutes
Method of Preparation:
- Wash the hibiscus petals after separating them from the flower. This sherbet/lemonade is made entirely of the petals of the flower.
- Two cups of water should be brought to a boil. Add the petals to the boiling water after it has reached a rolling boil. Remove the boiling water from the heat and stir in the cumin powder.
- The flower’s color quickly dissipates in the water, and it shrinks significantly.
- Remove the cover from the pot of water and let it aside for 15-20 minutes.
- Allow it to cool fully after that.
- Once the petals have cooled, gently crush them with your fingers. Remove the hibiscus petals and throw them away.
- Lemon juice, sugar, and cardamom powder should be added to the hibiscus water. The color of the lemonade suddenly transforms to a gorgeous crimson when lemon juice is added.
- Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
- Serve cold or over ice, and have fun!

This lemonade is typically made with a 5 petalled red hibiscus. I’m not sure whether you may use other red hibiscus (with a lot more petals) or any other colored hibiscus (except red). To prepare this lemonade, my mother recommends plucking red hibiscus flowers before 7 a.m., as soon as they have fully bloomed. Early in the morning, the quantity of anthocyanins in the blooms is at its highest. Is this accurate? I’m not sure. If you are a botany specialist, please let me know. 🙂
