This recipe is for a “Mexican Mule”, which is a traditional cocktail that originated in the USA. It is a full-bodied drink that comes in many variations. In this recipe, we use the “Old Fashioned Cocktail” recipe as a base.
The cocktail was originally created by the mixologist John Martin at San Francisco’s famous Harry’s New York flagship bar. The cocktail uses tequila, lime, and ginger beer, along with a splash of grenadine, in a copper mug.
It is an easy drink to make and it goes down real smooth. Here is a mouth watering version of the Mule Cocktail. This old classic has been around for years and is perfect for a warm summer day.. Read more about moscow mule recipe and let us know what you think.
A Mexican Mule is a light drink prepared with tequila, lime, ginger syrup or ginger beer, and seltzer water.
A Mule is without a doubt my favorite beverage to drink throughout the summer. It’s very refreshing, and it’s known as a Mexican Mule when made with Tequila.
The beauty of cocktail creation is that after you’ve nailed down the basic formula, you can experiment with various spirits and add-ins to change up the taste profile.
Any Mule’s base recipe is as follows:
- Tequila, Vodka, Gin, or Whiskey are all excellent mule ingredients.
- Lime Juice, Fresh
- Ginger Beer (or Ginger Syrup + Seltzer Water) is a refreshing beverage.
Ginger Beer vs. Ginger Syrup
This is just a personal taste, but I’ve fallen in love with this Ginga Syrup from Iconic Cocktail, a local cocktail mixer business in Phoenix. It’s made with all-natural ingredients and has less sugar than ginger beer.
If I’m going to drink ginger beer, I prefer one with a stronger ginger flavor and less sweetness. Please do not use Ginger Ale, which contains more sugar and has a very weak ginger flavor.
Both Fever Tree and Q Ginger Beers are excellent ginger beers.
How to Make a Ginger Syrup Mexican Mule
- Tequila Blanco, 2 ounces
- 1 ounce Ginger Syrup 1 oz Ginger Syrup 1 oz Ginger Syr
- 12 ounces lime juice
- Top with Seltzer Water and ice (I used Topo Chico)
Using ginger syrup allows you to be more creative with your mule’s tastes while keeping the sugar under check.
You may, for example, convert your Mexican Mule into a Prickly Pear Mule by. 5 oz Ginger Syrup, plus Prickly Pear Syrup, 5 oz.
Different varieties of seltzer water may also be used. Topo Chico has a great carbonation, and it also has a lime and grapefruit taste.
Serve your Mexican Mule in a copper mug for an ice cold drink and garnish with fresh mint and lime slices for a professional appearance. I’ve included some links to several reasonably priced mugs below.

This cocktail uses the reposado tequila, which has been aged in wood for at least three months, giving it a Flor de Cana Viva flavor. The Cointreau is added to the rim of the glass for a final touch, which is a nice contrast to the tequila’s woody notes.. Read more about pitcher of mexican mule and let us know what you think.
