Baked Cream Cheese Wontons

In the 1970s, cream cheese was the new fad food. While it didn’t catch on like Cool Whip, it did land in some of our favorite recipes from that time period including Cream Cheese Wontons. For those of you who grew up with the recipe, it’s a quick and easy snack. For those of you who never had it, it’s an excellent way to use both regular cream cheese and reduced fat cream cheese. For those of you who have never made it, you are missing out on one of the best recipes.

If you’re looking for a delicious and simple appetizer or finger food, wontons are a must. They’re especially good when you’re looking for finger food because they’re easy to eat and the kids love them. They’re also pretty simple to make and don’t require much time to prepare. They’re basically a fried dumpling made from wonton wrappers that are filled with cream cheese and baked. Once enough of them are made, you can pack them away in a bag or container and you can also freeze them. Just make sure they’re frozen before you get to them and thaw them before you use them. Once you’ve “fried” the wontons, they can be made into a number of different dishes. You can

It’s an understatement to say these are a family favorite! These Cream Cheese Wontons have been known to disappear from my kids’ plates. They’re so simple to create that even my kids can fold them.

Wonton Wraps (refrigerated), Cream Cheese, water to seal them, cooking oil spray, and a baking sheet are all you’ll need.

Wonton Wraps- I’ve seen them at most local grocery shops, and they’re certainly available at an Asian Market. They’re chilled, and there’s a lot of them in a single pack.

The remainder may be kept refrigerated for up to a week, or wrapped in plastic wrap and frozen in an airtight bag. Allow to thaw in the fridge overnight. They will cling together if you attempt to thaw them in the microwave.

I’ve used nearly every kind of cream cheese to make these wontons! Cream cheese in all forms: whipped, regular, and even flavored!

You may also use a Vegan Cream Cheese to make them dairy-free. When I discovered a dairy-free cream cheese that really tasted delicious, I was overjoyed. Trader Joe’s makes one of my favorites.

If you don’t have a cooking oil spray, gently brush oil on both sides of each wonton. Aside from that, any oil spray will suffice.

Wonton Folding Instructions

I folded these in a star fold when I first shared this recipe in 2017. This is how fried wontons are typically made.

The triangular fold is simpler now that I’m more efficient at preparing them, and it enables the wontons to become crispy on both sides since they can be turned halfway through baking.

Dip your finger in water and run it over the sides of the wonton wrapper to spread a spoonful of cream cheese in the center. Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle. Edges should be sealed and any air pockets should be pressed out.

Place the folded wontons flat on a prepared baking sheet, brush the tops with oil, and bake for 10 minutes, turning them over after 5 minutes.

Wontons: Serving and Storage

I use a bottled sweet chili dipping sauce and serve the cream cheese wontons immediately away.

If you need to make them ahead of time, take them out of the oven and reduce the temperature to 200°F. Place them back in the oven to keep warm after it has cooled. This is only good for approximately 30 minutes.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and oil a large baking sheet.

  • Dip your finger in water and run it over the sides of the wonton wrapper to spread a spoonful of cream cheese in the center. Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle. Edges should be sealed and any air pockets should be pressed out.

  • Place the folded wontons flat on a prepared baking sheet and, after they’re all folded, brush the tops with oil before baking for 10 minutes, turning them over after 5 minutes.

  • Serve with Thai sweet chili sauce right away.

Notes

To avoid drying out the wonton wrappers, keep them in the bag and only remove one at a time. If you need to make them ahead of time, take them out of the oven and reduce the temperature to 200°F. Place them back in the oven to keep warm after it has cooled. This is only good for approximately 30 minutes.

You can use any type of cream cheese you desire but I like to use the real deal for this recipe. If you want to make this recipe gluten free, use a gluten free cream cheese. If you want to make it vegan you can use vegan cream cheese or even soy cream cheese. I have also made these with store bought wonton wrappers. Be sure to use a good quality of wrappers as you don’t want them falling apart. These would also work great as a snack or appetizer..
