Our Keto Nutritionist Talks Ketones and Symptoms of Ketosis

I have been working with a lot of people over the past several weeks who are interested in learning more about ketosis. This is the body state that occurs when glucose (sugar) is very low and ketones are high. It is a process that has many benefits such as fat loss, helping to reduce inflammation, and more.

Keto is a weight loss method that relies on a low carbohydrate diet and high fat consumption. That means, no starchy carbs (like bread, pasta, potatoes, and rice) and no fruits or vegetables. However, it is largely unknown by the general public. Many people believe there are no benefits from it, and most people are scared of it. But there are many benefits that come from keto.

When you eat a diet that is high in fat and low in carbs, your body will start to use ketones as energy (instead of sugar), which can be a great thing for weight loss. However, when you eat a diet that is high in carbs and low in fat, your body will use glucose as energy instead of ketones, which can be a bad thing. The goal is to get a balance experimentally by eating a ketogenic diet and see what works best for you.. Read more about is it good for your body to be in ketosis and let us know what you think.

My ketone levels have always been high. Why am I gaining weight instead of losing it?

A person’s ability to lose weight is not dependent on the existence of ketones. Ketosis is a metabolic state in which your body consumes mostly fat (ketones) rather than glucose (sugar). It depends on whether it’s body fat that’s been stored or dietary fat that’s been consumed:

  • Exogenous ketones or MCT oil are used to consume significant quantities of fat (causing blood ketone levels to be higher than normal).
  • Calorie consumption, since although calories are not entirely responsible for weight growth, they do play a part.

To see if it helps, try lowering your fat consumption or changing your overall calorie intake.

I experience a headache, bloated stomach, and poor energy if I stray from the plan and consume extra carbs. Is this typical?

Yes. The longer someone is in nutritional ketosis, the more difficult it is for the body to reintroduce carbs. When the body adjusts (ketone adaptation), it uses ketones as its primary fuel source, which may cause severe side effects when consuming new meals.

The good news is that the more the body becomes used to using ketone bodies as fuel, the quicker it will return to ketosis, even if carbs are substituted. Stick to it, particularly if you want to prevent the keto flu symptoms.

Without testing ketones, my pals claim they can tell whether they are in ketosis. What are the physical signs and symptoms of being in ketosis?

word-image-20736

The following are some of the physical symptoms of ketosis:

  • Total energy increase
  • Hunger and desires are reduced.
  • Absence of brain fog or improved cognitive function

These advantages are typically seen after a few weeks of beginning a balanced keto diet. As these advantages become the new normal, recognizing the opposing symptoms gets simpler – in other words, recognizing that you are not in ketosis, but in ketosis.
