Tom Yum Goong- Thai Spicy and Sour Soup with Shrimp

It’s Monday. It’s cold outside. You’re hungry. You want some soup. Since it’s cold outside, you may want to warm up your tummy with a hot bowl of Tom Yum Goong- Thai spicy and sour soup with shrimp.

Tom Yum Goong is the king of Thai spicy and sour soups, and there is no better way to enjoy it than to make it at home. Preparing this soup is an easy task, requiring only five ingredients. I recommend that you cook it on the stovetop instead of a wok, as the smaller surface area of the wok will produce a much more intense flavor.

Tom Yum Goong is a spicy seafood soup that is commonly served in Thai restaurants in the spring and summer. It is a clear broth with the flavors of red chilies, lime juice, fish sauce, garlic, and lemongrass. Tom Yum Goong is garnished with chopped fresh Thai chives, lime juice, and scallions. Tom Yum Goong is most commonly served in spring and summer, when fresh shrimp are abundant.

Tom Yum is a famous Thai soup with citrus and spice overtones that may be modified to your preference.

The Goong portion of the name refers to shrimp, which is the most often utilized protein. You may also use chicken or a combination of seafoods. While the soup is quick to prepare, it does need some difficult-to-find herbs, which I was fortunate to get at an Asian grocery shop.

I’m ashamed to admit that it took me so long to publish this popular soup. I’ve prepared Yum Yum Goong (Tom Yum Goong) before, but it’s either too dark to photograph or my family is so hungry that I have to serve it straight immediately. But this time I was able to capture it on film! Here’s the recipe for Tom Kha with coconut milk if you like it.

This soup will warm your tummy and cleanse your sinuses, especially now that cold and flu season is in full swing. I know I’ve mentioned it before, but food is medicine, and fresh herbs may help you feel better when you’re ill. My children like Tom Yum, but without the chili peppers. I take some soup out of the pot and season it with the spices for my husband and myself.

Here’s how to make Tom Yum Goong at home, according to my notes. If you’re not acquainted with Asian cuisine, the ingredient list may seem daunting, but if your city has an Asian grocery shop, you should be able to get everything there. You’ll also note that my broth is transparent rather than crimson, like it is in most places. A Roasted Chili Paste provides the red oily color. This is optional, but I like to use fresh bird’s eye chilis. To keep the shrimp from becoming rubbery, add it to the soup after the stock is finished, and keep it at a low boil until ready to serve. If you wish to preserve any Tom Yum for another time, just add the shrimp when you reheat it.
