Larry Bird, the legendary Boston Celtics forward, was a fierce competitor in all he did. Byrd wanted to win at everything, whether he was playing golf or giving out autographs with the Dream Team. The NBA’s three-point league has inherited this competitive mentality.
Byrd earned his fair share of All-Star Weekends, but injuries stopped him from playing in exhibitions later in his career. While new champion Craig Hodges attempted to dispute his long shots, even when he was wounded, Byrd always had the right response.
Larry Bird has won the first three three-point shooting competitions in the NBA.
The three-point line was first used in the NBA in the 1979-80 season, often known as Larry Bird’s rookie year. The NBA didn’t introduce a three-point shooting contest until the 1986 All-Star Game, which was dubbed the Long Range Shootout at the time.
Dale Ellis, Sleepy Floyd, Kyle Macy, Norm Nixon, Trent Tucker, and Leon Wood joined Byrd and Hodges in the opening match.

In the 1988 finals, Byrd had the most three-pointers. After one of his seven career trades, Byrd struggled in the last round against Dale Ellis, who currently plays for the Seattle Supersonics. To win, the Celtics needed 15 points, but the Bigs only attempted five shots in the opening three minutes. In the last two innings, Byrd struck out seven batters, including the game-tying pitch and the game-winning moneyball.
Byrd was triumphant with one last shot, his arm lifted before the ball even touched the net.

After having surgery to remove bone spurs in his heels, Byrd missed the majority of the 1988-89 season, including the 1989 three-point game. In 1990, he returned and won his fourth championship. Unfortunately for him and NBA fans, Legend’s career was cut short due to back issues, and he did not reach the Finals.
After Indiana Pacers’ Reggie Miller’s last ball was not intercepted, Hodges finally got into the victory column without Bird in the way.
According to Complex, a reporter questioned Hodges after the game whether Byrd’s injury had hampered the team’s victory. When Byrd is healthy, he knows where to find me, said the defender, who has averaged 22.7 minutes per game this season, a new high for him in Chicago.
Bird, whose body had shrunk but not his keen intellect, was reminded of that statement. The former Indiana State star claimed he knew where Hodges might be found, and he replied, “Yeah, at the end of the Bulls’ bench.”
The only three-time NBA three-point shooting champions are Byrd and Hodges.
Despite their dislike for one other, Byrd congratulated Hodges on his win in 1990. Larry Bird told the Chicago Tribune that Craig Hodges is the master of the three-point shot. It was just out of my price range.
Aside from squabbles, three-point specialists and all-time greats have something else in common. They are the only players in NBA history to win three consecutive three-point shooting contests (and three in a row). Mark Price, Peja Stojakovic, and Jason Capono have all won two games in a row. Both Stephen Curry and Jeff Hornasek have won consecutive games, but Hornasek has yet to play due to the NBA lockout in 1998-99.
Hodges, who hit 19 straight three-pointers in 1991, and Steph Curry, who scored 31 points in the 2021 round, both hold records in the three-point game. According to USA Today, he beat Hodges and Capono’s record of 25 points, but he did it using a complete square of silver balls, which is a new invention.
