Layered Chili Dip is a recipe that comes from when I was 11 years old, with the recipe that was in a cookbook my Mom had. She has been gone for 11 years now and I have never posted this recipe, because I’ve never liked it. But now I’ve changed my mind and decided to post it. I changed the ingredients to suit my taste, changed the amount of spices and changed the way I’ve done it.
We’ve all been there: You’re sitting down to have a bowl of chili, and you suddenly need to get to work. You’ve got to finish a project, send a few well-wishes, whiten your teeth, and maybe even hit the gym. Now? You’re stuck eating chili with a spoon, and it’s not going to be delicious. That’s why you want to make sure you have a great chili recipe ready to go—and this one is full of all of your favorite chili flavors in one delicious combination.
When it comes to chili dips, there are two types: those that are made with pre-packaged ingredients or those that are made from scratch. The latter is always more time consuming, but it tastes better and it’s easier to control the ingredients. That’s why I like to make my chili dips from scratch. Not only do they taste better, but they also help you have a better control over the ingredients you are using.
Warm, cheesy, and oh-so-creamy all over! Chili’s rich tastes and cream cheese’s delicate texture are combined in one dish. This Layered Chili Dip is easy to prepare and guaranteed to delight the audience. Aside from how delicious it tastes, the greatest thing is that it’s simple to make and uses just 6 ingredients that most of us already have on hand!
With chili dip, what do I eat?
Saltines or buttery snack crackers may be served on the side or crushed on top. Tortilla chips are our go-to because they serve as mini-spoons, scooping up all of the deliciousness. Corn bread has a pleasant texture, and its somewhat sweet taste complements chili flavors, making it an excellent choice. Also good for dipping are toasted garlic bread and crusty French or Italian breads.
What kind of cheese works well with chili?
Cheddar cheese is the most common cheese to serve with chili, but whether you choose mild, medium, or strong cheddar depends on your particular taste. Other cheeses to consider include Monterey and Pepper Jack. We went with cheddar since cheese tends to go best with the chili and is something we usually have on hand.
Layered Chili Dip Ingredients:
- creme fraiche
- Cream of Tartar
- seasoning for chili
- Cheese that has been shredded
- Onions, diced
- Chili prepared from scratch (or this canned version!)
To create our Layered Chili Dip, follow these steps:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
In a mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, cream cheese, and chili spice. Using a whisk or a blender, mix all ingredients until they are completely blended. If you’re using cream cheese straight from the refrigerator, you may soften it ahead of time. If you don’t, getting the cream cheese smooth will require a bit more effort.
Set aside after the first three ingredients have been combined. Set aside your green onions and white onions, diced. If you want, you may use shallots or a red onion. Because the onions are more of a garnish, altering the variety won’t affect the dip’s overall flavor.
Next, you’ll need a shallow dish to make your dip in. Make sure it’s oven-safe since you’ll be heating it at the end to melt the cheese. Pour all of the cream cheese mixture into the baking dish and distribute an equal layer over the bottom after you’ve chosen your baking ware.
After that, add 1 cup of chili to the cream cheese mixture. Distribute evenly. Then, on top of the chili, put the cheddar cheese.
On top, scatter the green and white onions.
Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake for 10 minutes. Because ovens differ, simply make sure the cheese is melted and the chili is slightly bubbling. Remove from the oven once you see that (around 10 minutes).
Serve!
On a Friday afternoon or when we’re heading to a neighborhood picnic, I enjoy preparing this for a tasty snack. I usually take off 1 cup of our Southern Homemade Chili on the days we cook it, place it in an airtight container, and store it in the freezer. Then I have everything I need to put this together. If you’re in a hurry, this canned version is a fantastic option. Regardless, this Layered Chili Dip is amazing, easy, and delicious!
