If you want to lose weight, you should try to consume fewer calories than you burn. Some people who are overweight eat a lot of fat, which can lead to weight gain. When Gavin was a baby, he had hundreds of seizures. Extremely severe seizures. And the doctors didn’t know what to do about it. What is the ketogenic diet? Gavin’s diet changed his life, and now he’s seizure free.
Gavin Hiersch is a twelve-year-old boy from a small town in the Midwest. He was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 2. After years of trying different medications, many side effects, and almost two dozen trips to the hospital, his parents finally found a combination of diet and medication that finally gave him relief from his seizures. Unfortunately, his seizures are still just as severe as before his diet change. While his doctors have warned him that his seizures may become more frequent, they cannot guarantee that they will not become a life-threatening problem.
As previously stated, the advantages of a ketogenic diet extend well beyond weight reduction. Gavin, 8, and his mother Genevieve, a reader of our website, are a poignant illustration of this scenario. She shared this success story on her behalf to demonstrate how resilient she is in the face of epileptic seizures and how adhering to a low-carb, high-fat diet improved her life.
Gavin’s story is below:
My kid began experiencing hundreds of seizures every day when he was three years old. They were fatigue signs, with her body collapsing for long periods of time. Nobody seemed to know how to assist us. Our kid was doomed from the start to a life of diapers and homeschooling.
Dr. Chugani, then the director of neurology at Children’s Hospital in Detroit, was one of the experts we sought out for guidance. He instilled hope in us. He diagnosed our kid with Doose syndrome and prescribed a modified Atkins/Keto diet as a nutritional treatment.
We were lucky in that we were able to observe rapid effects. Our kid stopped experiencing seizures a few days after beginning this diet (limit 10 grams of carbohydrates per day). We were also able to wean Gavin off all of his anti-epileptic medicines, which was a great relief since the pills’ side effects were terrible. Despite the fact that he has been on this diet for five years, it has not always been enjoyable as he has learnt more about the things he was avoiding. Birthdays at school and Halloween were always a letdown, but we always made it through.
Our son has become a thriving and capable high school student thanks to Gavin’s doctor’s diagnosis, treatment, and care, and we are forever thankful for advancements in medicine and the wonderful doctor…. And, of course, for the bacon and eggs!
