Jamaican Callaloo with Saltfish Recipe – Jamaican Foods and Recipes

Saltfish is a popular Jamaican food that is made from salted cod. It is traditionally served with callaloo, which is a green leaf vegetable.

When callaloo is mixed with saltfish, it is just wonderful. In Jamaica, callaloo and saltfish are both popular dishes. Many Jamaican cuisines use saltfish, which may be prepared on its own or in combination with other ingredients, like in this dish. This delicious side dish is simple to prepare and requires just a few basic ingredients.

Callaloo with Saltfish

With this simple dish, you can add some Jamaican flavor to your substantial breakfast, lunch, or supper.

Callaloo is a big green leafy vegetable that resembles spinach in appearance. It grows in a similar manner to spinach, but with wider leaves and longer stems.

It’s also as simple to prepare as spinach, with the exception that it doesn’t absorb water or shrink when cooked.

Go here to see how I cooked the spinach and saltfish in the recipe.

Steamed callaloo is served with or without sailfish in Jamaica. I’ll show you how to make it using saltfish here.

What Is Saltfish And How Do I Cook It?

I use extremely saltfish that has been dried that still has its bones and scales.

Using boneless and skinless saltfish, on the other hand, is just as delicious and cuts down on prep time.

It’s a good idea to soak saltfish overnight before cooking it to help eliminate the extra salt.

I used fresh callaloo in this dish, but canned callaloo is also OK.

How to Make Saltfish Callaloo

Step 1: Put the saltfish in a saucepan of boiling water and cook for 10 minutes.

Step 2: Turn off the heat, pour the boiling water over the saltfish, and rinse it with cold water to chill it down.

Step 3: Using a fork, remove the fish scales and de-bone the saltfish. Set aside the shredded saltfish.

Step 4: Clean the callaloo and remove any rotten leaves. Then it was cut.

Step 5: In a cooking pan, heat a little quantity of oil over medium heat.

Step 6. Saute for a minute or two with the chopped onion, garlic, thyme, and scotch bonnet pepper.

Step 7: Toss in the diced bell pepper, tomato, and shredded saltfish.

Step 8: Add the chopped callaloo and mix well. Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and steam for 10 to 15 minutes.

You may season the pot with salt if you think it needs it, but the salt from the fish should be enough to flavor the meal.

If you don’t like spicy cuisine, you may substitute black pepper for the scotch bonnet.

Serving Suggestions

Jamaicans consume stream callaloo with salt fish as a main dish or side dish for breakfast, lunch, or supper.

Cooked callaloo and saltfish are served with fried dumplings, fried plantains, roasted or fried breadfruit, and rice.

I’ll eat it with anything, but fried plantain or roasted breadfruit will make me happy.
