This is a new blog, so I’m posting it to my Tumblr, where I often post recipes without pictures.  I wanted to try the German toast recipe, even though my family is opposed to it,  because I like the idea of eating my way around the world.  I’ve made the graham crackers, and I’m now on to the cinnamon rolls.  I don’t know about the filling, but I made my own coconut cream topping.  I’m looking forward to eating this for my last meal in Hawaii.

Toast Hawaii’s Background

This basic dish for ham and pineapple on toast turns out to have quite a history. According to the Toast Hawaii origin myth, it was made popular in the 1950s by a German TV chef.

According to legend, American troops introduced the open-face sandwich to Germany. They ate a similar dish from a famous American cookbook called a “Spamwich.”

Because Spam (a canned processed meat product) wasn’t accessible in Germany, they utilized ham instead. And there you have it – a traditional German meal that is still popular today!

We can’t help but notice the resemblance to Eric’s favorite Hawaiian pizza, so it’s fascinating to see another delicious dish with pineapple and ham.

To begin, toast your sandwich bread until it reaches a light brown color. You may use white or whole wheat bread for this recipe.

To give it the appearance of being a little bit healthier, we typically make it using whole wheat bread.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit at the same time.

Allow it to cool for a minute after removing it from the oven since the pineapple may be very hot – but eat it straight away because it tastes best fresh.

Before serving, a little amount of cranberry jelly may be placed in the pineapple hole, although this is entirely optional. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 4 sandwich bread slices (white or whole wheat)
  • ham slices (four)
  • 4 pineapple slices
  • four cheese slices (e.g. cheddar)
  • spreadable margarine (optional)
  • jelly made from cranberries (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius). Using parchment paper, line a baking sheet.
  2. Simply toast your sandwich bread until it is lightly browned.
  3. Place the bread on the parchment paper-lined baking sheet. If you like, you may put butter on the bread (optional).
  4. On each piece of bread, place a ham slice.
  5. Place a pineapple slice in the center of each piece of bread.
  6. Last but not least, top each pineapple with a piece of mozzarella.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake the Toast Hawaii for 5 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and is bubbling.
  8. Take the toast out of the oven and serve immediately. In the pineapple hole, a tiny dab of cranberry jelly may be placed (completely optional).

Notes

  • Lisa used to eat it with the individually wrapped processed orange cheese slices when she was a kid. However, we now use a slice of regular cheddar or even elemental cheese pieces when we prepare it.
  • After baking, some people prefer to put cranberry jam or a cocktail cherry in the center of the pineapple. We don’t typically do this, but it’s something you might attempt.
