Trader Joe’s Babka French Toast

It’s National French Toast Day, and with it comes (duh) many a recipe: how to make french toast, how to make crêpe, how to make French Toast ice cream. I couldn’t let today go by without making a recipe based on the classic babka, and Trader Joe’s has a wonderful one that would serve as a fantastic addition to any brunch menu.

Trader Joe’s is a grocery store chain with a cult-like following. The store is famous for its quirky, offbeat products, but what most people don’t know is that Trader Joe’s Babka French Toast is the stuff of legend. It’s an insanely popular item for breakfast at the store, and the fact that it’s only available at one location makes it even more of a treat.

When I woke up on Thanksgiving morning, I instinctively reached for my glass of orange juice and noticed it was empty. For the past few years, I have been making a different breakfast every holiday season: French toast, an egg dish, and pancakes. I have found that going with a predictable routine makes me more likely to eat something at all. Since it isn’t a holiday, I decided to have a French toast recipe, and it quickly became my favorite breakfast of all time.

How can you create the greatest French toast ever, you may wonder? Simply replace the white bread with Trader Joe’s Chocolate Babka. Babka French Toast from Trader Joe’s is an all-too-easy way to transform a breakfast staple into a weekend-decadent treat. Powdered sugar, salted butter and maple syrup, or cream cheese and jam are some of my favorite toppings.

Do you ever have trouble ordering French toast at a restaurant? You know how it is when you order something and it arrives mushy, tasteless, or just plain gross? When I go out for breakfast or brunch, I never order French toast. I’ve experienced a lot of terrible luck in the past. Usually, the bread has been soaked for too long, or the custard is too eggy. All of your previous errors will be undone with this Trader Joe’s Babka French Toast.

What exactly is a Brooklyn Babka?

Chocolate Babka is a delicious, swirly cake loaf with Jewish roots from Eastern Europe. Trader Joe’s Chocolate Babka is produced in Brooklyn by a tiny, kosher bakery that evolved out of a grandmother’s kitchen. That’s why we had to include this babka in our recipe! When cooked thoroughly, the chocolate swirl melts completely, resulting in the creamiest nibbles!

Is it possible to freeze a babka?

Absolutely! Don’t be scared to buy a bunch of cooked babka loaves. They freeze wonderfully, so don’t be hesitant to put them in an airtight container, bag, or plastic bag. It’s possible to freeze the bread for up to a month! We live 3 hours from the nearest Trader Joe’s, so whenever we visit one, we stock up since we know we can freeze it without losing quality! If you decide to make your own Babka, the dough may be frozen in the same manner as before.

Aside from syrup, what else can you add on babka french toast?

If you’re out of syrup or want to try something new, here are five great ideas: -Frozen berries cooked with a little sugar to create a sauce -Sugar powder -Honey -Apple sauce or yogurt -Jam

Trader Joe’s Babka French Toast Ingredients

  • 1 Trader Joe’s Babka Bread loaf
  • 2 beaten egg whites
  • 1 entire egg
  • a half cup of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • a teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 gallon of milk

How to make Babka French Toast from Trader Joe’s:

To make your egg mixture, choose a shallow dish to put it in. It should be shallow enough that you can easily dip your bread pieces in it.

To begin, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla until thoroughly mixed.

After that, cut your babka into slices. I get approximately 8-10 pieces off of each loaf of babka bread. The thickness of the pieces is usually about 1/2 inch.

One side at a time, dip your babka bread into the wet batter. Make sure you don’t soak the bread for too long – just long enough to create a moist covering on the outside.

Transfer the bread to a griddle that has been preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cook for 4 minutes each side on each side. The crispy texture and little browning on the outside of the french toast will indicate that they are ready.

Finally, transfer the baked babka to a dish and top with your desired toppings! Powdered sugar, syrup, and strawberries are the ideal complement to this delectable meal, in our opinion.

As you begin to cut into the babka, you’ll realize that keeping the slices in tact is difficult, so proceed with caution. The same can be said for soaking in the egg bath and flipping on the griddle, among other things. To prevent breaking, use a spatula big enough to handle one whole slice. If you’re having trouble getting your slices to hold together, pile them up, pour on the toppings, and serve as a “deconstructed” (literally) french toast. Look at you, you’re so creative.

A little over a week ago I was in TJs grocery shopping for some pantry staples and saw a loaf of challah at the bottom of the bread bin. I was intrigued! I’ll admit, I was skeptical that it would taste like real French toast, but after a day of a hearty breakfast (chapati with coconut milk), I was pleasantly surprised that it indeed tasted like French toast. Like, I was like, “OMG, I am not dreaming! This bread tastes like French toast!” I didn’t need to go out for French toast after that, and I’m absolutely not one for eating bread for breakfast. In fact, I’m not a huge bread fan at all. But this bread? It makes me want to. Read more about trader joe’s babka nutrition and let us know what you think.
