Every Fourth of July there’s a lot of food to eat and only a few hours to enjoy it. This year, I decided to change things up and make an easy Berry Trifle recipe for my family. There’s a lot of great food that’s gluten free and can be made ahead of time for a crowd to eat the day of festivities.
Summer is in full swing, and this Fourth of July, you’ll be celebrating the holiday with your family and friends. Nothing says Independence Day quite like a classic American dessert. This 4th of July Easy Berry Trifle is a dessert that will have everyone singing ‘Kumbaya’, especially if you make it ahead of time. Although it’s not a classic American dessert, it’s one that everyone can enjoy during the holiday and it’s one of my family’s favorites.
Our Easy Berry Trifle is creamy, sweet, and satisfying, just what your weekend needs! For a light and refreshing side dish or dessert, combine fresh fruit with a yogurt and cool whip combination. It’s a crowd-pleaser for any summer event coming your way, since it’s loved by both kids and adults! This meal is also great for breakfast and may be served at any time of day!
I’ve been preparing this dish since I was old enough to drive. As a child, my mother often assigned this job to me since she knew it would be impossible to screw up! I’ve tweaked it a little over the years to make it my own. My mother used to add sugar to increase the sweetness, but I like to leave it off. Because the fruit has so much natural sweetness, I discovered that the trifle didn’t need any more sugar! This dish serves approximately 10-12 people, making it ideal for parties. If I know I’ll be cooking for my family, I just halve the ingredients.
Is it possible to create the trifle ahead of time?
Absolutely! You may make this up to 24 hours ahead of time with no problems. Using frozen and/or canned fruit is the problem with preparing a tiered fruit dish ahead of time. They contain a lot more liquids, and as the weighted layers settle, the juices are expelled and flow down and across the plate. This will make the appearance less appealing and alter the flavor.
How many layers does a trifle have?
There are just three kinds of layers in this particular berry trifle. To make the layers of the trifle, alternate between all of the components. A layer of strawberries, a layer of blueberries, and a layer of a yogurt/cream cheese/cool whip combination are used in this recipe. Between each fruit layer, we utilize the yogurt mixture. It makes the color and flavor distinctions more clearer and more tasty!
The following are the ingredients for our Easy Berry Trifle:
- softened cream cheese
- Yogurt with strawberries
- juice of a lemon
- whipped cream
- Extract of almonds
- Strawberries with blueberries
To create our Easy Berry Trifle, follow these steps:
Wash the blueberries first. If you’re using frozen fruit, defrost it first and then blot some of the excess juices out with a paper towel to keep the mixture from becoming sloppy. We used 6 cups of strawberries (from a 2-pound package) and 6 cups of blueberries for our fresh fruit.
Strawberries should be cut into bite-sized pieces.
Cut the lemon in half using a knife. To obtain 3 teaspoons of lemon juice, you’ll only need 1/2 of a lemon. Set the lemon aside after juicing it.
Next, combine the 5 ounces cream cheese, 12 ounces strawberry yogurt, and 3 tablespoons lemon juice in a large mixing bowl. Remove from the equation.
Combine the whole 8-ounce Cool Whip carton and 3/4 teaspoon almond extract in a small mixing bowl.
Stir together the cool whip mixture and the yogurt mixture until everything is well mixed.
Place a layer of strawberries in the trifle dish, then 1 cup of the yogurt mixture, and finally one layer of blueberries. Each layer contains approximately 2 cups of fresh fruit. Continue layering until all of the ingredients are used up or the dish is full. It’s OK if the yogurt mixture doesn’t spread evenly when layered. Simply move the mixture about and, if feasible, make it even.
Finish by sprinkling the remaining berries on top of the trifle and serving! Enjoy!
One of the greatest parts about this dish is that you can make it fit any occasion! To make the trifle more colorful and entertaining, add a few drops of food coloring to the cool whip mixture. Use whatever fruit you have on hand: bananas, blackberries, mandarin oranges, pears, raspberries — anything you have! All fruits go nicely with the creamy combination! This goes well with Guacamole Chicken Salad, Pineapple Jerk Chicken Bake, and Pesto Bruschetta Chicken Bake!
