Over the past few years, there has been a surge in the number of apps and games available for the iPhone and iPad, the Android and Windows operating systems, and laptops and desktops. These have allowed customers to perform mental exercises in the form of games, applications, and training programs to improve their mental abilities.

When it comes to fitness, brain training is probably your least effective tool in the box. Sure, it might help one person or a handful of people get fitter. But it won’t help your industry to improve.

There’s an old saying in my field of fitness: “you can train the body, but you can’t train the mind”. As evidence, I point to the fact that our brains are more powerful than anything the body can do–and yet we’re still constantly bombarded by junk food, drug-laden foods, and a seemingly never-ending stream of unnecessary information. If you train the body, but neglect the mind, it’s like training a Ferrari and then taking it for a ride in a rusted-out old truck.

Most fitness instructors understand the significance of assisting customers in improving their physical abilities. Many individuals are unaware, however, that helping clients improve their mental abilities may be much more essential. Welcome to brain fitness training.

It’s not only a physical procedure to change your physique and improve your health.

It’s a psychological process as well.

Coaches that are at the top of their game teach more than just physical abilities. They also acquire mental abilities, such as focus, motivation, resilience, and change management.

So, what exactly are mental abilities?

Mental talents include a broad variety of psychological abilities that are perhaps too many to list here. But, to get you started in the correct path, here are some examples.

  • Mental Capacity : Concentration Even in the face of distractions, focusing attention where it needs to be. For instance, despite your hectic schedule, stick to a healthy food plan. While your children crawl through the walls, you may keep yourself occupied by performing workouts at home.
  • Refocus your mental capacity. When things go awry, bring attention back as quickly as feasible. For example, it’s time to go back to eating healthily after a fun weekend full of parties. Alternatively, you may stop training after receiving an SMS from your employer.
  • Setting a goal, working toward it, and sticking to it are all examples of mental capacity. For example, make the decision that sleeping is more essential than watching TV at night, and stick to it most nights.
  • Identify your fundamental values to increase your mental capacity. Determine the most essential values in your life, establish priorities, and take steps to put them into action. Consider the following scenario: Recognize that your primary motive is to set a good example for your children and then follow that example.
  • Mental Capacity: Developing a sense of self-awareness Recognize how your immediate thoughts and emotions are linked to your actions. For instance, the finding that certain emotions consistently lead to specific eating habits. Alternatively, you may be forced to go to the gym due to external conditions.
  • Mental Capacity: Learning about ourselves via tales Realizing that we are continuously creating tales and situations for ourselves and that we may rewrite them with a new conclusion. Consider the following scenario: I’m a jerk at the gym might be rewritten as I come every day and give it my all, and I finish up looking like Hey! My first pull-up was just completed! Bye-bye, athletic glove!
  • Mental Capacity: Facing fears, anxieties, and concerns rather than avoiding them. For instance, acknowledge and identify your concern about whether you will succeed or fail, and explain that this is normal – everyone experiences it – and that these emotions are not a cause to give up.
  • Limiting Factors in Mental Capacity Identify and modify limiting factors (what is presently holding you back). For example, maybe you despise your work, have unsupportive friends, or live in a location that does not align with your objectives. Recognize the issue and strive to improve it.
  • Breaking the Deadlock with Mental Capacity Recognize when unhelpful attitudes or habits are interfering with your progress. For instance, I don’t believe I have the willpower. In addition, you must be able to create new beliefs or actions. For instance, I am accountable for my choices.
  • Recognize when instincts and emotions take control, pay attention to them, and try to rectify the situation. Improve instinctive reactions to anger, sorrow, or boredom, for example.
  • Discomfort : Mental Capacity Accepting and thriving in the face of adversity. For example, when you learn a new action or habit, you know it’s going to be painful, yet you still do it.
  • Resilience is a spiritual talent. The conviction that you will endure whatever occurs and that you will recover from setbacks, losses, and/or failures. For instance, I will benefit from it and grow as a person as a result of it.

Wow, that’s a lot of brainpower! We’ve just scratched the surface. Your customers will need a variety of extra abilities in order to become healthy and fit in the long term. But don’t get too carried away. They can be constructed.

Everything may be improved if you break down your objectives into skills and talents through daily practice, as Dr. Berardi pointed out in his recent essay.

This is where you enter the picture.

You may assist your customers in developing their mental abilities in the same way that you assist them in developing their muscles and energy systems.

Why are mental abilities so crucial in fitness?

It’s no surprise that 95% of individuals who lose weight get it back. Changes in diet and exercise habits are one of the most difficult issues to solve.

The physiology is, of course, straightforward. Consume the proper quantity of food; for most individuals, this is less. This is a wise decision. It’s more than that for the majority of individuals. If you follow these two tips, you will reduce weight while also improving your blood count and overall health.

People who try to eat less or exercise more, on the other hand, are defying gravity. They attempt to break the present behavior’s inertia. And not only do these behaviors exist, but they also fit well into modern human existence.

As a result, if you’re attempting to change (or if change has found you and is pulling you along kicking and screaming), you must also be willing to change.

  • Managing the pain and fear that we all experience while trying anything new.
  • Concentrate on completing certain particular activities (many of which are new) while abandoning others (many of which you actually want to do more of).
  • Listen to your intuition, toss out what doesn’t work, and explore fresh possibilities.
  • Negotiate what you need with people in your immediate vicinity, such as family, friends, and coworkers.
  • Maintain your resilience, flexibility, and optimism in the face of unavoidable setbacks that will sap your energy and even cause you to lose hope.
  • Change your perceptions of who you are, what you need, and how things should operate.

All of this is, of course, possible. However, this is a long cry from the current fitness industry exhortation to eat less and exercise more.

This may be a tough task. This isn’t only true in terms of fitness. Consider what you’ve attempted to alter in your life, such as your family relationships or your job environment. Isn’t it always difficult?

This is why mental preparation is so crucial.

When you assist your customers in developing mental skills, you are assisting them in becoming stronger, more confident, and more equipped to deal with whatever life throws at them.

They also assist them in dealing with stress more effectively.

Stress management and mental abilities

They not only assist your customers in navigating change, but also in coping with stress.

It’s a difficult world to live in. That is why, on the first day of working with us, we question our customers about their stress levels. We don’t simply want to hear about their difficulties. We’d also want to know how they handle the stress.

People are typically startled and broken when they arrive at our door. Maybe you’re in the same boat as me.

Not only have our customers attempted a variety of diets and workouts before coming to us (leading to frustration, worry, and discouragement), but they also often have significant lifestyle problems.

Consider the following scenario:

  • More than 20% of men and 40% of women say they are often on the brink of a crisis and have trouble dealing with stress.
  • Almost two-thirds of men and women think their jobs are highly stressful, with almost one-third saying their jobs are extremely difficult.
  • Almost three-quarters of women say caring for others (such as children or elderly parents) generates considerable stress, while 15% say it causes severe stress. Others look after pets such as rocks or turtles.

It’s no surprise that folks are stressed. They strike a balance between job, family, and other responsibilities. They are often students or caregivers.

Change becomes much more difficult when these additional variables are taken into account. And developing mental abilities becomes much more critical.

Because even if you’re anxious or worried about anything else, you’ll be able to…

I have no desire to change.

You want to concentrate on what you know and respond to the circumstance in whatever manner possible (which often involves self-medicating with things like alcohol or overeating).

They are incapable of looking for themselves…. Even a smidgeon.

To a busy parent, taking care of oneself or finding time for yourself may seem as implausible as earning a billion dollars and relocating to the moon.

He or she is hurried, preoccupied, and under pressure.

Who has time to exercise or eat healthily? I don’t even have time to go to the toilet some days!

Being on a roller coaster of emotions.

Their thoughts and emotions may become stiff and repetitious, numb and empty, or a mix of tears, stone-cold stillness, and ferocious rage.

It is very tough to cope with all of this without mental training. It’s difficult to make changes in your life. You’ll be trapped if you don’t have mental abilities.

Mental talents, on the other hand, may assist you in overcoming the difficulties that life unavoidably throws at you.

Even better: As your mental abilities improve, you’ll begin to see the struggle as a game. This is a game that you can win. And, in the end, to have fun with it.

Live, live, live. This is something I can handle.

This is why coaches who understand how to teach mental skills are so effective.

But it isn’t all roses and sunshine.

You’ve run out of supplies, so let’s move on. You’re ready to start offering mindfulness coaching to your clients. Continue to exercise your mind!

First, let me offer you some advise.

Many of our clients are shocked to discover that we don’t simply speak about what is, or even how it is, when they begin coaching with us.

Of course, we talk about all of these hot topics. Clients are encouraged to focus on and examine their inner game, including their thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and views, in various courses. Many regular workouts are also intended to improve mental abilities.

Some individuals are perplexed by this. Perhaps a tad airy. Alternatively, obsessed.

Where can you get the proper food? I’m not looking for a therapist. What does it matter what I think? It has nothing to do with you. Stop with the awestruck awestruck awestruck awestruck awestruck awestruck a

You may prepare yourself in the same way. When you first mention mental skills development, some people will raise their eyebrows. It’s a good thing, too.

As a coach, your job is to spot this resistance. People’s objections and concerns should be respected, and they should feel heard.

Let them know you understand what they’re going through. You may then ask them to help you learn something new by going through a gradual – or even extremely slow – procedure with you.

Even the most apprehensive customers may notice a substantial shift in awareness as a result of this therapy. In reality, the majority of NP’s early critics have changed their views.

After all, it’s not uncommon for individuals to say things like:

I had no idea that was significant. Wow. What a huge difference.

They have broadened my horizons. Thank you very much.

Everywhere I go, I get enlightenment moments.

These are the sorts of breakthroughs that customers experience when they improve their mental abilities.

They can observe how developing mental abilities improves their capacity to make informed choices. And, maybe most significantly, to be satisfied with the choice.

Because the client is persuaded of the strength of spiritual talents as soon as he starts to develop them.

Consider the following scenario:

  • The more conscious you are of your thoughts, feelings, choices, and beliefs, the more chances you will have to alter them.
  • The more you can deliberately relax or prepare ahead of time, the less likely you are to make rash or stressful choices.
  • The more you understand that your life scripts are just that, the more you’ll believe you have the power to alter and rewrite them.

This is real self-determination.

This is a significant shift in one’s life.

Trainers need skills, and clients need skills.

This essay does not include how to train the growth of mental abilities, mostly because you cannot teach something you have not experienced yourself.

That’s why I constantly tell people that if they want to improve their mental abilities, they should start with themselves.

This may sound odd to many fitness and health professionals. Why waste time on yourself when you might be concentrating on your customers?

There are two reasons for this:

  1. Develop your own capabilities. Coaching is a physically and mentally demanding job. You’ll be better equipped to manage stress, deal with change, and pull off the same psychological tricks you want your customers to do if you build your own mental talents. This translates to a higher quality of life for you and more energy to assist customers. In terms of fitness, we advise moms to look after themselves so that they can look after their children better. That also applies to you.
  2. Feel the same way your consumers do. Only by experiencing what the other person is going through can you really comprehend what they are going through. If you don’t believe in coaching enough to do it yourself, it’s difficult to advertise (and sell) it. We also need assistance in certain areas, particularly in the field of mental abilities.

What now?

Recognize that external change is inextricably linked to interior transformation.

It’s a recipe for disaster to try to assist a person alter their physique without simultaneously working on their brain, inner self, and spirit.

As a consequence, they are either very unhappy, unexpectedly unsatisfied, or degrading quicker than they expected.

If you assist them focus on their inner game, on the other hand, they will attain profound health, integrity, and stability.

Accept the fact that change is tough.

This is very normal. Behavioral change may appear unachievable in the face of extreme stress.

This is also why coach Hardass McCreemy’s strategy fails miserably. It won’t help if you’re tired, sad, and crippled, so do it, you wretched sack.

Incorporate mindfulness training into your customers’ fitness and diet regimens to make the transition smoother. This will help them concentrate, become more motivated, and be more resilient, among other things.

Make time to work on your mental game.

You’ll need additional chances if you want to become a master coach. Managing stress more effectively. Plus, you’ll have extra energy to provide your consumers. All of them need the development of these critical mental abilities.

As a bonus, by participating in the mental skills training yourself, you’ll be able to witness firsthand what your customers go through when you coach them. This is a win-win situation.

You will surpass all others in this area if you are the kind of coach that helps customers improve their mental abilities. You improve your reputation, boost your sales, and profit from the practice.
